What drew me to this story is the question held in its title. We do not choose the family circumstances we are born into, yet those circumstances can shape the way we learn to see ourselves and the world.
Bonnie Bluewater follows a day in the life of Delilah and her family, bringing attention to hardship, inherited family patterns, and people whose work helps sustain society while often going overlooked.
What I appreciate about this premise is its attention to lives that deserve to be seen. I’m featuring it because a short story can make room for empathy and remind us that there is always more to someone’s life than we first notice.
